Mother Nature Delivers Knock-out Day for 2019 Arts Festival

[SHERBURNE, NY, June 2019] – You couldn’t have asked for better weather if you tried! June 8th was 75 degrees and sunny, a beautiful way to spend time in downtown Sherburne taking a walk through the arts.
This year was perhaps the best year so far for the festival, not only in terms of weather but also in terms of number of artists and the attending crowd. At some points throughout the day parking lots and street spaces were packed as people from around Central New York and the Southern Tier arrived for a look. The only real glitch of the day was our biggest food vendor -- D&D Enterprises of Rome -- dropping out at the last minute (they won’t be invited back!) … but Bueno Tacos of Hamilton and Theresa Aiello of Rome did a great job of picking up the slack.

From the kiddy duck pond matching game to the glorious paintings, drawings, illustrations, and photography … and from the ticket auction and special raffle to the terrific music and fantastic glass, soap, fabric, wood, ceramic, pet food, and jewelry crafters, it was a fine day in June. The Sherburne Public Library and the festival committee send out a big thank you to everyone who participated. See below for our student art winners and for an updated list of sponsors. Ticket auction winners will be posted as soon as possible.

Live on stage this year at The Sherburne Arts Festival will be Jenni Larchar, Tom Murphy, and Jack Webster.

Jenni Larchar & Tom Murphy

Jenni Larchar and Tom Murphy have been playing music together for over eight years, with a focus on American standards and vintage country. Jenni's lovely vocals and Tom's stride piano are a pleasing combination, with a little fiddle, harmony, and humor thrown in. Diverse audiences feel at ease and nostalgic, always pleased to have experienced the talents of Jenni and Tom.
Jenni and Tom have been featured performers at The Chenango County Fair, The Local Music Project, The Palace Theater, many farmers markets and senior centers, as well as performances in Maine and Massachusetts. They are regular favorites at The Oxford Veterans Home.
Jenni Larchar, a singer and music activities specialist, loves singing songs with the children of Chenango Nursery School, sharing nature with children at Rogers Center, and performing for the veterans in Oxford. Jenni's smile and song welcome others to join her love of life and music.
Tom Murphy took piano lessons in his youth at the insistence of his parents. In the 1970s he played Irish tunes, folk music and American standards in venues around New England. After a long hiatus, Tom is happy to be playing piano publicly again, and is delighted to be accompanying Jenni Larchar at community events in Central New York.

Jack Webster a native of North Norwich and an SECS graduate, currently is a sophomore at SUNY Oneonta majoring in music industry with a minor in audio arts production. Jack intends to spend four years at Oneonta, after which he plans to work in the live sound field, recording studios, or in sound for TV and film.
Jack and his guitar will be on stage in Gaines Park on June 8. Along with acoustic covers of classic favorites by such artists as Johnny Cash, The Rolling Stones, The Band, and Neil Young, he’ll also entertain festival-goers with newer tunes, such as those by Sublime and Jack Johnson.

2019 Featured Artist Anita L. Garzione

On top of a beautiful hill in Sherburne, New York, Anita L. Garzione has inspiration to explore various facets of self expression. While gardening or mowing lawns, she envisions designs and ideas that she will then put into drawings, paintings, photos or jewelry.

Anita was invited to join the Sherburne Art Society by Mariea Brown and Fred Buhner in 1967, during her freshman year in high school. Little did she realize at her first meeting that the tall, extremely kind gentleman sitting next to her would be her artistic friend and mentor for over 42 years. W.Ralph Murray, whose work she had admired at countless art shows and demonstrations, eventually convinced her to put paint on paper and start exploring the world of watercolors and then pen & ink. Ralph also introduced her to the beautiful state of Maine where he held workshops on Monhegan Island and then in the Camden area. Anita continues to go every year and is enjoying the teachings of Guy Corriero.

One of Anita’s favorite Sherburne Art Society memories was learning to “hang” an art show with Fred Buhner. This experience helped her greatly when she took over the chairmanship of the statewide juried art show for the Norwich Fine Arts Guild, a position that she kept for 25 years. On the board and very active with both art groups, she was also invited to become a board member of the Chenango County Council of the Arts, the United Concert Association, the Chenango Memorial Auxiliary, the Downtown Sherburne Beautification Committee and the Facilitations Committee of the then developing Norwich Classic Car Museum. Anita was also a member of the Norwich Garden Club for several years and drew inspiration from the many gardens she visited.

While a member of the Sherburne United Church of Christ, she was in the choir, Women’s Fellowship, a Deacon, a Trustee and Chair of the Missions Committee. The Clothing Closet and Christmas Care were major projects with which she was involved, and for several years she also coordinated the Christmas Care program for the S-E School district. Her mission outreach continued to Mexico where she worked for nine years with teams to build small houses, “cassitas” for the homeless. Anita had the pleasure of working with several other community members during these work sessions, which occurred yearly until the violence caused by drug cartels made traveling to Mexico too dangerous.

Anita learned to work with stained glass from Nancy Callahan and eventually taught glass classes at BOCES for several years. She developed her metalwork and jewelry skills with Chris Irick at Munson-Williams-Proctor in Utica. In earlier years, Anita studied photography with Rod Sutton and has always had her camera with her ever since – a passion that crazes her family and friends. Her husband John refers to her as the “Cyclops” and……….thousands of photos later…he may be correct in his comments!

Another of her passions is “collecting,” having amassed countless items that she enjoys sharing with others when she displays them at the Sherburne Library. From snowmen to flamingos she has tubs galore filled with every kind of theme and has had fun designing the window displays for many years.

Always trying to improve her work, she enjoys painting with fellow artists at the W. Ralph Murray open studio group in Clinton, and every Tuesday finds her in Sherrill painting with her friends at the Community Fine Arts Guild. She has learned much from these fine artists! And for inspiration, Anita has those thousands of photos ….!

She thanks John, her husband, for his constant encouragement and appreciation of all her work – even the designated “back of the closet and never to see a frame” pieces. Quite a few of the actually framed pieces adorn the walls of his Norwich practice, Chenango Therapeutics, where Anita is also the business manager.

For any inquiries or if interested in purchasing any of her artwork please contact Anita at 607-674-4247 or at crystaldragonstudio@yahoo.com.

Our featured artist this year is Sherburne resident Anita L. Garzione, who will give a presentation at the library on Friday evening, June 7 as well as exhibiting and talking about her work on Saturday.  In addition to live music on June 8 there will also be a juried exhibit of artwork by Sherburne-Earlville Central School students and an interactive kids’ art tent with plenty of supervised projects. Other special exhibits will also return: The Art of the Bird, with master falconer Rick West and his birds of prey; Out of the Cage Pet Mobile, which features such interesting wildlife as hedgehogs, Madagascar hissing cockroaches, ferrets, parrots, and bearded dragons; and artist Jim Coon will be back to draw caricatures of attendees … for FREE!

Raffles and a ticket auction will be ongoing throughout the day, with dozens of gift baskets donated by local businesses and residents.  All proceeds will benefit the Sherburne Public Library and the Arts Festival.  The festival is a revival of the original art show begun in 1947 by local artist Mariea Brown.

All artwork is under tents in case of rain, and there will be food and drink available for purchase throughout the day.  Parking is available in several village lots and on the street. If you would like to be a food vendor we offer exclusivity on a first come, first served basis, and there is no charge.

7th Annual
Sherburne Arts Festival:
A Fantastic Walk in the Arts!

The weather was perfect and the crowds were steady and smiling at the 7th Annual Sherburne Arts Festival held on Saturday, June 9, in Gaines Park, Sherburne. By all accounts, the 1,500-plus attendees had a grand time!

Some of the highlights: Featured artist John Weeks displayed his beautiful nature art and chatted with visitors throughout the day and Katherine Hemsley thrilled kids with her balloon shapes. Speaking of kids, the children’s interactive art tent was hopping … and speaking of hopping, international performance artist Chris Clark “hopped” over quite a few squealing children in his well-received bicycle stunt presentation. Artists sold their creations, folks stopped at the food booths for lunch, Julian Button judged the SECS art, Rick West’s raptors delighted their audience, the bands played, raffle sales boomed, and Pie-Mania was a sell-out!

A big thanks to everyone who came out to support the show, which is hosted by the Sherburne Public Library. SECS student awards and raffle winners are listed below.  A special thank you to Dr. Christine Oaklander for donating proceeds of Henry Grant Plumb works to the library and to Save The Sherburne Inn Restoration Project.

Mark your calendar for the second Saturday in June, 2019. If you would like to be a volunteer for next year’s show, drop an email to sherburneartshow@aol.com and we’ll put you to work!

Chris Clark Bicycle Stunt Show Comes to the Sherburne Arts Festival

The Sherburne Arts Festival committee is delighted to announce that, in addition to artists, crafters, live music, a ticket auction, food, raffles, and a student art competition, the 2018 festival will feature the Chris Clark Bicycle Stunt Show on Saturday, June 9 in Gaines Park, Sherburne.
Over the past decade professional stunt cyclist Chris Clark has competed around the world and has entertained thousands at events like the Gravity Games, the Vans Warped Tour, New York's Times Square Parade, and even the Olympic Games.
During his high energy presentation, professional cyclist Chris Clark shares his story of growing up with a passion for cycling and how he used that passion to make friends, stay healthy, and even as an excuse to avoid the peer pressures all children face.
Each 30 minute show is a breathtaking display of balance and agility as Chris maneuvers his bike and body over his custom built ramps and obstacles, displaying the skills he has acquired in his years of national and international competitive experience. Chris even gets the audience involved by including volunteers from the crowd as part of the show.
Chris’ Athletes Who Say NO program was developed to inspire children to find an active, healthy passion and use their desire to constantly improve as a means for keeping their lives on track, making healthy decisions and surrounding themselves with like-minded friends.

Topics discussed include:
  • Helmet / sports safety
  • The importance of having an active hobby
  • Avoiding drugs and alcohol to reach your potential
  • Finding friends who support your active lifestyle

Following the speaking portion of the program, Chris shows the audience what is possible with hard work and dedication with a demonstration of the skills he has developed in his years of national and international cycling competition. Kids see first-hand what can be achieved with hard work, dedication, and by leading a healthy lifestyle.
Following the show, audience members will have the opportunity to meet Chris, get free autographs and find out how to enter to win a free bike, courtesy of Schwinn!

Artists and crafters may request an application to participate at sherburneartshow@aol.com, or may download an application at http://sherburnelibraryny.org/wp-content/uploads/2018/04/Art_Show_Sherburne_Application-2018.pdf

John Weeks Honored as Featured Artist at Sherburne Arts Festival

By Brian McDowell

On a prominent wall in John Weeks’ Baldwinsville apartment hangs a sign announcing the works of his father, Edwin James Weeks, who created the lovely paintings and illustrations that surround it.
The mini-gallery is not surprising, as his father’s work was a huge influence on John’s own pursuit of nature paintings. His father came to the U.S. from England as a teenager.
“He was in his mid-40s when I was born, the last of six children,” Weeks says. Edwin worked as a commercial artist in Rochester, creating advertising illustrations for Bausch & Lomb, Kodak, and other notable clients.
“He set up a studio in our house in Albion, New York, and I watched him work from a very early age,” John says. “It was a great education.”
John Weeks is well known around the state as a nature artist, and acrylics and scratchboard are his preferred media. He also works in pen-and-ink and watercolors. His works have been displayed in libraries and art galleries all across New York State.
This year’s featured artist for the Sherburne Arts Festival (10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, June 9 in Gaines Park), John is looking forward to returning to Sherburne to display some of his artwork.
The 92-year-old Baldwinsville resident was the original director of the Rogers Environmental Education Center when it opened in 1968 as the state’s first interpretive center for the New York State Conservation Department. His visit this June will coincide with a ceremony honoring him and other people who made Rogers what it was during its first 50 years.
Weeks remembers his time in Sherburne fondly and is excited and humbled by his selection as this year’s featured artist.
“I’m absolutely delighted, because Rogers and Sherburne are pretty important to me,” he says. “We really loved Sherburne. It was a great place to live.”
In the early years when Rogers was still being planned, Weeks illustrated his vision for Rogers in a series of pen-and-ink drawings of the main building, the walking trails, and the vistas that he imagined would greet future visitors. The illustrations helped land the funding that got the center started, and they bear a strong resemblance to what the place would eventually become.
Those very illustrations live on as note cards and greeting cards he had printed years ago. And there are wildlife paintings by the dozens — deer and birds, forest creatures of all kinds, and even some depictions of snow leopards and other exotic animals he may only have seen on nature shows but captured beautifully nonetheless. Some of his art work was recently on display at the Baldwinsville Public Library, the latest in a series of shows he has hosted across New York State.
The Sherburne Arts Festival is in its seventh year in Gaines Park, a reinterpretation of the original Sherburne Art Show begun in 1947. Artists and crafters from around New York State are invited to show and sell their work and may download an application at http://sherburnelibraryny.org/wp-content/uploads/2018/04/Art_Show_Sherburne_Application-2018.pdf.

New this year: the festival will welcome the Chris Clark Bicycle Stunt Show. Chris performs around the country inspiring children and young adults to find an active, healthy passion and to use their desire to constantly improve as a means for keeping their lives on track, making healthy decisions, and surrounding themselves with like-minded friends. Go to http://chrisclarkbicyclestuntshow.com for a preview of Chris’ performance.
